Position Overview: Engineering Manager – Solutions Engineering

Location: Lagos

Canonical envisions a transformative era in software operations, aiming to enable true model-driven operations through next-generation infrastructure-as-code. This initiative seeks to empower companies to efficiently run bare-metal operations across various domains, including high-performance computing, private cloud, data lakes, AI/ML, and analytics.

The Solutions Engineering team, working closely with the managed infrastructure operations team, collaborates on private OpenStack clouds and Kubernetes clusters globally. Operating in Python, the team focuses on creating open-source automation capabilities that simplify operations for users building on Ubuntu.

As an Engineering Manager, the primary responsibility is to lead and inspire a regional software engineering team to innovate and contribute to this transformative initiative. The role involves hiring, coaching, mentoring, and fostering career development, while also demonstrating technical leadership through active code contributions. The manager will play a crucial role in setting and managing expectations, coordinating with stakeholders, advocating for modern software development practices, and contributing to a collaborative engineering culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead and develop a remote team of Python engineers globally.
  2. Hiring, coaching, mentoring, feedback, and hands-on career development.
  3. Demonstrate sound engineering principles through direct code contributions.
  4. Plan and manage progress on agreed goals and projects.
  5. Set and manage expectations with other engineering and operations teams.
  6. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders or customers.
  7. Advocate for modern, agile software development practices.
  8. Help develop and evangelize great engineering and organizational practices.
  9. Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture aligned with company values.
  10. Actively participate in the leadership team and collaborate with other organizational leaders.
  11. Travel globally up to 10% of the time for internal and external events.

Requirements:

  • Bonus points for a University Degree in Computer Science or related Software Engineering field.
  • Thorough understanding of modern infrastructure, including OpenStack or Kubernetes.
  • Experience in both operations and software development.
  • Familiarity with the challenges of large-scale, multi-cloud operations.
  • Expertise in Go is a plus.
